Winter Fun at Castaway Bay + a Giveaway

by Marcy on March 11, 2019 · 26 comments

Update: This giveaway has ended. Winner is #15, Amanda! Thanks to all who entered.

Do the winter blahs have you down?! I can relate! I have lived in Ohio all of my life, and while I can’t imagine calling any other place home, it is about this time of year when I am ready to pack my bags and head south to some warmth and sunshine!! But due to budget and all of my kid’s activities, getting away for any length of time can be a challenge.

Something that my family and I like to do in the winter time to break things up is head to an indoor water park for a night or two. We have been taking our girls since they were little, and it’s always a fun time. This year, I was offered the chance to visit Castaway Bay in Sandusky, Ohio for a night. We had never been, so I jumped at the chance! Sandusky is about a 2 hour drive from our house which is perfect. In between basketball games and an indoor soccer tournament, we carved out 24 hours to make the quick trip for some uninterrupted, family fun!

Castaway Bay Resort Review

Castaway Bay Resort Review

For those who don’t know, Castaway Bay is owned and operated by the company that runs Cedar Point. If you have ever visited Cedar Point (or the Breakers etc…) you know that they do an amazing job of offering top notch rides and attractions.

My first impression of Castaway Bay was that it was a busy place! We visited over President’s Day weekend, so there was a healthy crowd at the resort. That being said, everything ran very smoothly, and our wait to check in was minimal.

Our room was tastefully done and comfortable, and we had a nice view from our balcony. You can tell that the hotel has been around for a long time, but not in a bad way. It has been restored and updated, and everything was very nice. After checking out our room, we put on our suits and headed to the Indoor Water Park. My girls spent probably 80% of their time in the wave pool. I spent probably 80% of my time in a comfy chair near the wave pool, reading my magazine! ;-)

One of my favorite things about Castaway Bay was the size. This indoor water park has it all, without being overwhelming large. I found the park to be clean and well maintained. My girls are 8.5 and 13 and I felt totally comfortable allowing them to navigate the rides on their own while I relaxed with my husband. (yes…I did get in the wave pool eventually!) Big Daddy’s Snack Shack is a nice place to grab a few snacks or adult beverages while you are hanging out in the waterpark. One note about adult beverages: you can only get one drink, per person (with ID) at a time.

Rendezvous Run was the favorite water slide of my family, and my 13 year old and I especially liked The Grotto – a huge hot tub that is partially outside! It was super cold outside the weekend that we visited, so it was a cool effect to be sitting in hot water with cold air above us. (note: Castaway Bay does a great job of limiting the number of people in the hot tub at one time which is nice for those who are IN the hot tub, but lines to get in can be long) I felt that there was a nice mix of things for kids of all ages to do. I know as a parent of little kids, I would appreciate the overall size of the park.

My youngest daughter is obsessed with arcade games, so we were happy to find an onsite arcade just off of the water park area. After spending some time at the arcade, our family got dressed and walked over to the attached Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant. It was so nice not to have to go out into the cold for dinner. Beer & wings made for the perfect ending to our casual, fun weekend!

Plan a Visit!

I would highly recommend checking out Castaway Bay if you are in the Sandusky area. I think it would be fun anytime of the year, but especially for a quick getaway over the winter. You can check out the Castaway Bay Special Offers – including packages that include tickets to Cedar Point when it’s open. There is so much to explore in the Lake Erie area – I’m excited to go back for more fun this summer!
