American Flag Fruit Pizza Recipe

I like to cook, but I love making desserts. I’m sure that has nothing to do with how much I love to eat dessert. ;-) Anyway, one of my favorite things to take to a party or cookout in during the spring and summer months is fruit pizza. It’s pretty, it’s semi-healthy (hey – it has fruit in it!! ) and it is so versatile. You can use whatever fruit you have on hand to make a masterpiece. Truly.

Last year I was perusing pinterest for a cute July 4th dessert idea (check out my Independence Day board here) and came across several American Flag themed dishes. I found a few American Flag Fruit Pizza ideas, so I decided to give it a try.

I adapted my favorite sugar cookie recipe (from The Lady & Sons Just Desserts cookbook), made my own cream cheese frosting and finished it off with blueberries and strawberries. If you have a favorite sugar cookie recipe you could certainly adapt it for your own fruit pizza! If you are crunched for time (or if you don’t like to bake), a roll of pre-made sugar cookie dough from the store would work fine as well. You can lighten this recipe up a bit by using Neufchatel Cheese in place of full-fat cream cheese, and no one will know the difference.

My American Flag Fruit Pizza Recipe was such a hit with my kids and family that I wanted to share it with you! You could add raspberries to the mix if you are looking to switch things up a bit. I might try that this year. This is the perfect dessert to take to a Memorial Day or July 4th cookout. It’s easy to make and is nice and portable, and chances are good that you won’t have any leftovers!

Serves: 16

  • 2 Sticks of Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 1 3 oz package of Cream Cheese, softened
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 Egg Yolks
  • ½ tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 2½ cups Flour
Cream Cheese Frosting:
  • ½ Stick of Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 1 8 oz package of Cream Cheese, softened
  • 16 oz Powdered Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • Blueberries (for stars)
  • Strawberries or Raspberries (for stripes)
  1. Cream together softened cream cheese and butter with a mixer. Once combined, add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add egg yolks and vanilla. Add flour and mix until just combined. Chill dough for 30 minutes.
  2. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and grease a rectangular sheet pan. Remove cookie dough from the fridge and using a bit of flour (on your hands) press dough in to the sheet pan evenly. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the cookie is a light golden brown.
Cream Cheese Frosting:
  1. Cream together softened butter, cream cheese and vanilla. Slowly incorporate powdered sugar until icing is smooth. Once the cookie is completely cool, frost the cookie.
  1. Wash fruit and pat dry. Slice strawberries (if using). Arrange fruit on the iced cookie to mimic the American flag, per the image above. Serve immediately, or cover and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to eat. Once the fruit is placed on the pizza, it is best eaten in the same day. Wait to place the fruit until right before serving if you plan to refrigerate the iced cookie overnight.
