Hexbug VEX® Robotics Robotic Arm Review

If you have a mechanically minded child and are looking for a fun new project for them, be sure to check out the VEX® Robotics Robotic Arm, exclusively from HEXBUG®.

Recently I was sent the Hexbug VEX® Robotics Robotic Arm Review to review, and because it is supposed to teach kids STEM principles AND because I have 2 girls in my house who love to build, I thought this would be a fun summer activity for them.

Last week I gave the box to my 10 year old who promptly told me “I’m a LEGO pro, so this should be easy!” and off she went.

She put in a solid effort, but she eventually enlisted the help of her dad, who, I should mention, is a mechanical engineer. He is super handy to have around the house! ;-)

Over the course of a few days, my husband and daughter assembled the VEX® Robotics Robotic Arm, and the general feedback that I got from them is that it was challenging to assemble, but that the pieces are high quality and very well made.

According to the product box, the VEX® Robotics Robotic Arm is for ages 8+. However, when I look on their website, it says ages 14+. My husband tends to agree more with the 14+ recommendation based on the level of difficulty.

If you are looking for a challenging project for the kid who has built it all, I would definitely recommend this product!

Something that I like about this product is that the end product is a fully functional robotic arm…and my 6 year old (who did none of the work building it, but has figured out how to operate it!) now has her very own “claw” that has so far entertained her for hours.

You can preview a little of that in the video below:

Here are some additional product specs for the VEX® Robotics Robotic Arm, Exclusively from HEXBUG®:

  • completely functional construction kit inspired by real industrial robot arms
  • four points of motion that let it rotate 360 degrees while raising objects up to 14 inches in the air and extending them 10 inches
  • use each control knob to pick up surrounding objects with the claw
  • teaches important STEM principles
  • compliant with CPSIA standards
