New Year’s Activity for Kids | Sugar Cookie Decorating

new years activities for young kids

I have a confession to make. Yesterday (New Year’s Eve day), I realized that I hadn’t planned anything special for my kids for New Year’s Eve or Day. We never do much for New Year’s – my kids aren’t really old enough to stay awake until midnight yet – but I typically come up with something to mark the occasion. I don’t know about you, but I feel like it’s a challenge to come up with New Year’s Activites for young kids!

I shared my lack of plans with a friend, and I then proceeded to whine about how my plans to make sugar cookies with the kids never happened before Christmas (among other things). Being the creative person that she is, my friend suggested that we make ‘2014’ cookies for New Year’s instead. I thought this sounded like a great plan – I could knock out two sources of mommy guilt with one stone! ;-)

While we ended up taking the kids bowling and out to dinner last night for New Year’s Eve, I did get the sugar cookie dough mixed up and put in the fridge so that it would be ready today. (I used the sugar cookie recipe from The Pioneer Woman’s Holiday Cookbook – one of my favorite Christmas gifts this year).

I dug out my Wilton 101 Cookie Cutter Set and found the numbers that I needed. While going through the cookie cutters, I decided to pull out letters for my girl’s names, plus a star cutter.  “Happy New Year” would have been cute as well.

While the cookies baked, I mixed up my favorite butter cream frosting recipe, tinted it and dug out the sprinkles. Once the cookies cooled, I put down wax paper and arranged a working station for each of my girls.

Tip: I always have a ton of random plastic knives left from birthday parties. Those came in handy today and minimized my clean up!

I then called my girls out of their play room and let them have at it. I let them lick their knives, lick their cookies, get icing in their hair, drop cookies on their clean clothes and eat as much as they wanted (it wasn’t as much as I anticipated). It was so fun to watch them create!

And because I’m all about keeping it real, here is the end result:

Not your typical Pinterest perfection, but pure beauty in this mama’s eyes!

Happy New Year, friends!
