3 Ways I’m Slashing my Grocery and Household Spending This Year + some Personal Goals for 2013

Can you believe that we are almost 2 full months into the new year? I am finally recovered from the holidays, and I have been working hard on both my personal and business goals for 2013. I don’t really believe in “resolutions” per se…but I’m definitely a fan of setting goals. I don’t know what to do with myself if I’m not working toward something. ;-)

I won’t bore you with my business goals for this year (although if you share this blog with your friends that gets me a step closer to reaching some of them!), but I thought I would share a few of my personal ones.

Top on the list is adding another hour of cardio per week to my workouts this year. I have been going to the gym consistently for at least 2 hours per week for a couple of years, but I really need to step it up further if I want to see better results. For me, working out in the morning is best. I don’t have time to make excuses if I just go and get it over with. And at this point I crave it for the stress relief…something I never thought I would say! So far I have been squeezing in 2-4 hours of workouts into my week. Some weeks are better than others. I’m beginning to realize that ideally I need to ramp this up to at least 5 days/hours per week, but I’m taking baby steps.  I took this goal one step further and started using the FREE app My Fitness Pal for iPhone and My Fitness Pal for iPad (my favorite)to track both my workouts and calories. I’m starting to see results and I’m super happy about that!

Getting my office cleaned out, painted and set up is also high on my list. We have been in our house for 1.5 years now and one of my favorite things about this house was the office space – I didn’t have it before. Sadly the office is currently our dumping grounds for random storage totes, blogging items that I get to review and piles of paper!! If I had a nice organized space to work in I might be more organized with the business too… We have made some head way – we purged quite a bit, put in new wood floors, and bought 2 new book cases at IKEA that have been assembled. Now I need to get serious and start organizing and filling the shelves. Oh and painting and decorating… Pinterest is providing tons of inspiration for me!

My husband and I always make financial goals, and this year a big one is to start investing a portion of our cash savings. We are still committed to debt free (except the mortgage) living, but I need to do a MUCH better job of cutting back on my extra spending this year. I have gotten lazy when it comes to couponing, and my weekly grocery bill shows it!

Something that I am trying to pound into my own head is that even if we can afford to buy something, that doesn’t mean we NEED to. While we have done a good job of preparing for an emergency, we can always do better. And that’s what I want my focus to be this year.

Here are 3 ways that I plan to reduce our grocery/household expenses this year:

1) Menu Planning and Cooking at Home More! (preferably from scratch, but I’m not going to beat myself up about it) I’m going to try to revive my “Cooking From Home With Stretching a Buck” series too…as I find new recipes that I want to share. Freezer/Bulk cooking is something that I want to explore more to save both time and money.

2) Paying attention to sales cycles and building up my stockpile again. That means shopping around (back to the drug stores I go!) and using coupons!! I can’t tell you how many times I had to buy items at full price last year, either because I ran out of the item or because I didn’t clip coupons. I also plan to incorporate more trips to ALDI into my routine this year.

3) Reducing Waste and Focusing on “Needs vs. Wants”. I am becoming increasingly disgusted with the amount of “stuff” that we own, and I am really going to make a conscious effort to purge and cut back on purchases this year. We are very blessed and we truly don’t need any more STUFF! I also need to do a better job of using up leftover food and produce!

I will do my best to check in from time to time to let you all know how I’m doing!

What are your goals for 2013? How are things going so far?
