Taco Pizza Wheel Recipe

Today I thought I would share one of our family favorites, my go to Taco Pizza Wheel Recipe. This is one of the few dinners that I make the my husband asks for consistently. I love the versatility of this dish – you can change the salsa and/or beans that you use, you can make this with ground turkey instead of ground beef. An all bean/vegetarian version would taste great too!

This Taco Pizza Wheel Recipe can be made super spicy or really mild, depending on your tastes. Because my husband tends to like his food spicier than I do, I buy spicy sauce for him to add after the fact. That way we are both happy. :-)

I prefer to use homemade pizza dough when making this dish (my favorite pizza dough right now is the one in this cookbook), but if you are looking for super fast and easy, using prepared dough works just as well. In terms of taco seasoning, every now and then I’ll mix up a batch of homemade taco seasoning that I store in a mason jar in my pantry, but during our busier seasons (sports, school etc…) I have no issue using the packets of seasoning from the grocery store.

You can drizzle the finished taco pizza wheel with sour cream and/or shredded lettuce, serve it with a side of guacamole, or eat it as is. It’s truly up to you! Technically you could use real pizza toppings on this dish. I can see a dessert version of this recipe (concept) being fun to play around with as well. You are only limited by your imagination!

Taco Pizza Wheel Recipe
Ingredients
  • Pizza Crust Dough (1 package of store bought, or homemade)
  • 2 c Shredded Mexican Cheese or Crumbled Queso Fresco
Taco filling
  • 1 lb Lean Ground Beef
  • ½ Spanish Onion
  • 1 c of your favorite Salsa
  • 1 Taco Seasoning Packet OR ¾ c homemade
  • 1 can of Black or Pinto Beans
  • ¼ c water
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Brown Ground Beef and Onion, drain off fat.
  3. Add Salsa, Beans, Taco Seasoning and Water and stir.
  4. Simmer mixture for 5 minutes.
  5. Press pizza crust into a round pizza pan.
  6. Spoon taco mixture around the outside edge of the crust, leaving an empty circle in the center (approx the size of a cereal bowl).
  7. With a sharp knife, cut the crust (without filling on top of it) in an X, turn the pan slightly and cut another X. This should leave you with 8 dough triangles.
  8. Pull the tip of each dough triangle up over the filling and tuck under the outer crust.
  9. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes until crust is baked through.
  10. Optional: serve with lettuce, sour cream and salsa.
