I have had the opportunity to write some pretty amazing reviews and giveaways since I started this blog, but this is my biggest one yet!
The folks at Intel have developed brand new, cutting edge processor technology, and they were kind enough to send me an Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-3697 14-Inch Laptop (Aluminum) to try it out for myself. And in keeping with the back to school theme – I thought I would share some info on what to consider when purchasing a new computer – whether for yourself or for the student(s) in your life.
Most people would probably agree that computer shopping can be a bit intimidating when it comes to figuring out which options you need. The first question that you should always ask yourself is: What are you going to do with it? We have two laptops in our house – one that fits my needs as a blogger, and one that fits my husbands needs as someone who mainly browses the internet. Knowing what you need the computer for will help you to determine if you should purchase a laptop, a desktop, one with all of the bells and whistles etc…
One of the main considerations that you will make when buying a new computer is the type of processor that is in the system. The processor serves as the “brain” of the computer, and it is important to know how much brain power you are buying. Intel makes the processors in 80% of the world’s PCs., and they recently developed a new set of processors – the Intel Core i3, i5 and i7. i3 is an entry level processor, i5 is a medium level processor and i7 is the best processor in this series.
Today’s students often require mobility, long battery life and performance (to take notes, listen to music, IM, watch videos, edit photos etc…). Intel recommends the Core i5 processor for a majority of these students, based on those needs. We have a Core i3 and a Core i5 system in our house, and in retrospect I would have gotten the Core i5 for me (the blogger) and the Core i3 for my husband (the internet browser).
Something that I learned about Intel that I found interesting is that they work closely with software, hardware and application companies (iTunes, Microsoft) to make sure that the hardware and software is working well with the Intel Processors. In short: this collaboration shifts performance to where you need it based on what you are doing, while saving energy and thus extending battery life. Intel Core Procesors are dual processors – which is like having 2 brains in one computer. These cores (or brains) can focus on tasks at the same time, which is why you are able to multi-task on your computer without having to deal with the dreaded “hour glass”.
As I mentioned previously, I was given a Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-3697 14-Inch Laptop (Aluminum) to review. We have never owned an Acer and I was excited to try something new. This particular model is equipped with a Core i5 Processor, and I can definitely tell a difference in performance from my Core i3 laptop when having multiple internet tabs open, along with Skype. One of the biggest complaints I have about laptops is the short battery life – and I can honestly say that the battery life on the Acer blew me away. Seriously. I also love that it is a slim and light laptop – perfect for times when I need to take my laptop with me to conferences and on out of town trips. The only complaint that I have about the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4820T-3697 14-Inch Laptop (Aluminum) has nothing to do with its performance – I did find the key board to be a little stiff. This is something that may “break in” over time, and is a small price to pay for performance and portability. And did I mention the long battery life?!

Great Information on looking at laptops. We have been looking because I have an old laptop that is a family one but I have started homeschooling my two boys, 6th & 8th grade, and we are in need of another one for their lessons. Of course they will have to share with mom because I love to look at couponing websites several times a day.

The most important features in a computer for me are speed, memory, and the graphics card. As I typically do a lot of photography editing on my computer, I need something that will handle a number of photo editing programs at once without slowing down or freezing up. Of course, lots of memory is helpful in fulfilling this need!
Furthermore I am in the market for a good laptop as I’m homeschooling my children and it would be SO helpful to have my daughter working on her stuff in the same room as my son and me. :o)

Wireless ability is great!
For my needs, speed is everything. Multi-core processors offer the ability to have several applications up and running simultaneously, but without a combination of RAM and an adequate display adapter, that processing power will be virtually useless.

Fast processing and battery life are important. I am in college and so I bring my laptop to campus a lot. It is no good when I am in a 3hr lecture and there are no outlets so my laptop dies in the middle. Right now my laptop is slowly dying so I am in the market for a new one anyways, this one looks pretty sweet with 11hrs of batter and looks like it has good specs.
Having a fast processor, enough ram, and battery life is most important to me. My laptop battery only lasts about an hour and a half now. A laptop with 8 hours of battery life is amazing!! Thanks for the giveaway!

I guess about the MOST important thing is speed, as “time is money” and we don’t want to waste either. A long lasting battery is important also, as you can compute on the go during otherwise wasted time.

I would totally give this laptop to my stepdaughter if I won it. We live in Indiana and she’s in Germany for 46 weeks out of the year, and I would give it to her to use for the internet (skype, email, etc) so we’d have more contact with her!
Speed, space, and savings. All three of those together make for a wonderful laptop.

The whole concept of this laptop appeals to me. I have a couple of kids with special needs and fine motor skill issues. This would be helpful in the classroom to take their notes and keep track of their schedules. And when they aren’t using it, after bedtime, I could surf around as well!

The most important thing on a computer for me is the memory/speed. I have seven children and not a lot of time to sit around while things load. =)

RAM and the processor are essential things I look at. My hubby broke our only laptop and we cannot afford to spend around $500 for a new one, with our tight budget. A new one would serve both of us. I really hope I win. Thanks for the giveaway.
