Organizing My Coupons, Take Two + a Giveaway – CLOSED

by Marcy on September 14, 2009 · 416 comments

Update: As of 2/6/14 it looks like the Couponizer is out of print. Check out this coupon binder option instead.

Last month I updated and republished my All About Couponing Series, which is my attempt to share as many tips and tricks about using coupons that I can. Part of my series is Coupon Organization 101 where I share a few methods you can use for organizing your coupons. Last summer I put together a coupon binder which I loved, in theory. In reality I couldn’t seem to keep the thing updated to save my life. Instead of pulling out the expired coupons and filing the new ones, I found myself shoving coupons into a shoe box or not clipping them at all – which means I had stacks of coupon inserts cluttering my living room. As the summer has gone on my frustration level with my coupons has risen and I knew that something had to change. That’s why I was excited when Amy Bergin from the Couponizer Company contacted me to see if I would be interested in reviewing a Couponizer. I was willing to try just about anything at that point, so I eagerly agreed.

My Couponizer arrived within a week or so after talking with Amy, and I was excited to start using it. I admit that I had a few reservations – I wasn’t sure that the Couponizer would be large enough to store all of my coupons, nor was I sure that it would be sturdy enough to hold up to the beating it would likely take in my possession. I was also worried that it would end up being a marketing gimmick and didn’t know what I would do if I wasn’t happy with it. Thankfully, that hasn’t been the case at all!

I have been using my Couponizer for about a month now, and I’m happy to say that as of today, all of my coupons are finally in one place!

What I like about the Couponizer:

– The fact that I can keep everything in one place. Not only does the Couponizer have room for my shopping list, receipts, and a place to track my savings, but it also comes in a zippered pouch that holds my scissors, a calculator and any coupons that I have yet to file.

– It is the perfect size to throw in my bag or purse when I go shopping. It is also extremely easy to use while shopping – with pockets that hold my shopping list, coupons that I intend to use during my trip, and the coupons that I am actually going to end up using during checkout.

– Because I have a larger number of coupons in the book, I love the stretchy rubber band that holds the outside of the book together.

– The book is sturdy and appears to be well made. The pages are not flimsy at all, and so far I have not had any problems fitting all of my coupons into the folders.

Minor Annoyances with the Couponizer:

– While the coupons categories are thorough and seem to cover every type of coupon I have, I would prefer to see all of the food items together and all of the non-food items together, rather than listing the categories in alphabetical order.

– It would be nice if there was a way to stagger the folder portion of the pages so that the bottom of the book didn’t get so “fat” when full of coupons. Thankfully the rubber band holds it all together well and the shopping list and coupon tracker help to balance out the front and back of the book.

My final verdict? So far I love my Couponizer. I am really interested to see how I do at keeping it up to date, and to how long it can withstand the abuse I will likely give it. :-)

The Couponizer retails for $19.95 plus $5.75 shipping ($25.70) and comes with the following:

– 8″x5″ booklet with 20 grocery coupon pockets, 6 non grocery coupon pockets, 3 gift card/loyalty shopper card sleeves, shopping pockets
– 20 page shopping list
CoupStacker pre-sorting mat color coded to match the system pockets
– 15 page spiral bound list pad with cardboard backing to track coupon savings
– Blunt tip Scissors
– Clear vinyl zippered carrying bag

You can read more and purchase one if interested here.

I am really excited because Amy has graciously agreed to give away a Couponizer to one of my readers!

Hello!
Just today, I bought my first “coupon organizer.” I’m new to couponing… but found out pretty quickly that I would need something to hold all of my coupons. I went to Target and bought a $1.00 coupon-sized accordion file. It only has 7 sections… and isn’t very easy to look through… But it does the job until I find something better.
I subscribed to your emails, and I advertised this blog in my facebook status and on my personal blog.

Thanks for doing what you do! It’s very helpful!! :)

Currently I have two methods in place, (well, sorta) . I only clip the ones I think I will use soon, and try to file those away. Usually they get stuffed here and there in envelopes. I then file all of the remaining flyers in a hanging file system. This Couponizer would greatly help me with filing the ones I clip out.

I currently organize my coupons in a coupon file. It is like an accordian file thingy, with 13 pockets. It is okay… but I’d love something better. I’ve been eyeing the Couponizer, and would love to win. :D

Love your blog!!

Currently I’m using a dinky little accordian pouch that Vocalpoint send out recently concerning the health awareness. The Couponizer would be a great upgrade.

I would love to have this coupon organizer! I am currently trying to organize all of my coupons and looked to your site for help. I am trying the baseball card method and it is just not making me happy at this point! I have you listed on my personal blog and always recommend your site to my friends at church who are looking for guidance! Thanks for all you do!

I have a coupon organizer similar to this but it is not as sturdy and has taken a beating. I would love a new one with a bag to put it in. Thanks for the giveaway.

11 Virginia September 14, 2009 at 3:56 AM

Since I started couponing, I have been using an index card file box. It works okay, but is a little bulky when shopping and somewhat hard to look through quickly. I would love to try something like this that may be easier to use.

I use a small plastic coupon organizer that I got from the Target $1 section.

I am new to using coupons and I have an accordian type filer with different secions and when I get the ads each week, I try and match in-store coupons with manufacturer coupons and put in different envelopes according to each store I shop at. It’s ok, but would love to be more organized!

currently, i cut/print only the coupons i use during my shopping trip, thrown in envelopes by store and i just add more envelopes every time i go out…makes my purse cluttered…

I’ve been using a briefcase-looking accordion file folder. Inside it are color-coded envelopes containing coupons for one of about 30 categories. I can either take the whole briefcase in or just pop out the envelope I need.
Problem is, I overstuff the unused parts with sale flyers and unclipped coupon inserts. Also, the latch sometimes pops open when bumped, spilling contents everywhere.

I currently use a file box and file all my inserts by date and name. I also utilize a binder for clipped coupons. To go to the store I use envelopes where I have written my list on the outside of the envelope and put the coupons to use inside.

I have several methods. Still looking for a solid one though. Right now, I have coupons in 2 binders. One binder has baseball card size pockets, the other well it is just a mess. I have tried, envelopes, binders, boxes, you name it everything but a coupon organizer. Thanks for doing what you do! Bless you, Brooke

I currently have a 3 ring binder with baseball card sleeves. This is what seems to work best for me. I got a 3 ring pencil pouch to hold my scissors and other stuff.
I usually go though my binder once a month to get rid of all my old or expired coupons. This system seems to work best for me. I have tried all the rest :)

I have been couponing for a while and I am embarrassed to say that right now, my coupons are in piles on my dinning room table!!! I was trying to use the expandable file, but didn’t have enough room… I decided to make a binder, but I have 3 kids 3 & under (youngest is 8 wks) and I am in school full time! The binder has gone on the back burner and my coupons have taken over my dinning room! This would be amazing if I won! And my husband would be happy to see all of the coupons put away!

61 Hollynn Kidwell September 14, 2009 at 11:52 AM

Currently I do not have an organization system at all for my coupons. They are in envelopes, my purse, lunch box, and scattered all over the house and my car. I need some help and would love to win this couponizer system. Thank you.

62 Anna September 14, 2009 at 11:54 AM

My coupons are all still in the inserts – taking up 1/2 of my bookshelf! Every time I wanna save a buck I have to look through the WHOLE stack. It’s horrible and I REALLY need to get organized!

63 Fran September 14, 2009 at 11:55 AM

Hi,
I’m currently using an accordion style wallet that came free with a purse I purchased. Once a week I pull all the coupons that I think I will use soon and place them in a neon colored envelope. The neon color helps me locate my coupons quickly when I’m fumbling through my purse (which turns into a black hole at times)

64 Carrie Cornett September 14, 2009 at 11:56 AM

I use eleven envelopes that get very worn out after about 6 months and have to be replaced.

I currently use an accordian style holder for coupons. It would be nice to win the Couponizer to make things a little easier – a place to actually put the coupons once an item is in my cart, a place for my shopping list, etc. At the store I’m always trying to “juggle” all my coupons and list and end up dropping coupons, making the shopping trip much longer! Thanks for the chance to win! (jaacgifford@yahoo.com)

I buy multiple papers a week and combine each insert into one mega insert. Then I put them in a big plastic file box in folders labeled with the date of the day they came out in the newspaper. I try to clip the ones i know i will use soon and the ones for free items. I put those in my wallet so i have them all the time. I am still trying to find a good system for my miscellaneous coupons from magazines, mailings, stores, etc. I have a binder with photo and baseball card plastic sheets, but i never have the time to actually put all of those coupons into them.

Hi there! I love your site.

I got serious about couponing this summer, and it didn’t take me long to realize that I needed to come up with a way to keep my coupons organized.

So, I devised my own little binder using clear baseball card pages.

90 momma-lana September 14, 2009 at 1:02 PM

I clip all the coupons every week. Then I put all the ones I won’t use in a basket that my friends know are available to whomever wants them. After about a month those rotate out into shoe boxes that I sort into to ship coupons to a Navy base in Japan.
The coupons I will keep and use are files in 3 accordian style coupon keepers and those are in a tote bag that goes everywhere with me kind of like a second purse. I like thet idea of a binder but don’t think I would keep it current.

91 Sarah Cook September 14, 2009 at 1:05 PM

I use an accordion folder, mostly with categories of food and non-food items, but in one of the sections I put a piece of paper folded in half for each of the stores I typically shop at.

Thanks!

Right now I’m using a binder with those baseball card pages. The binder is breaking and I’m falling further and further behind on organizing coupons because it takes so much time. Ugh.

Hi,

The only way I seem to be able to organize my coupon is by using a accordion check file holder which I bought at target. It is sturdy and small enough…the only problem is I lose coupons in the organizer all the time. LOL! I would love the chance to win this organizer. Thank you.

105 Sophia September 14, 2009 at 1:35 PM

Good morning! I use a 3″ binder with baseball sleeves for the majority of my coupons. I also have a small coupon organizer purchased at Walmart that holds my Internet prints. When I go shopping I bring my binder…but also try to pull out what I plan to use and put them in an envie :)

I am so unorganized when it comes to couponing. I have several of the accordian files but they are sitting here empty now. I also use regular envelopes and have a shoebox full of coupons i need to organize some day!

I leave my coupon inserts in tact and file them by date. This works, but I know I miss several coupons this way since I don’t clip and file them individually.

111 Lori September 14, 2009 at 1:45 PM

I currently use the coupon binder idea from your site. Like you, I like it when it is organized but it is hard to keep it that way!

112 born2worship September 14, 2009 at 1:49 PM

I have been couponing since January and organization is the #1 priority. Without that you waste more time than you save money. Anyway I followed the advice of a friend and organize my coupon books by publication (SS RP P&G) and date in a plastic file crate with hanging file folders. Loose coupons or IPs I organize by category in a binder with baseball card holders. Then I have an accordion style organizer that I use for my shopping trips. Behind each store I have a section for rainchecks and receipts for that store. Just a note: print out a copy of each stores coupon policy and keep it in there also.

113 Brenda September 14, 2009 at 1:50 PM

I would love a new couponizer. I currently use a small plastic acordian coupon holder which was perfect for starting out. I’ve used it about a year now and the eleastic on the cord is stretched out and there aren’t nearly enough compartments for organizing coupons. I’ve been weighting my options to upgrade between the couponizer and a binder and your post has convinced me that the couponizer is the way to go! Thanks!

I am fairly new to couponing, but have yet to find the perfect system. Currently I am using an accordion file, but it doesn’t have as many pockets as I would like and I end up also with coupons all over the place because it isn’t the right system. I have been looking into the whole notebook system with the baseball card sleeves, but am not encouraged yet, as I don’t want to carry a huge notebook with me while grocery shopping. It is still a work in progress!

130 The Grocery Guru September 14, 2009 at 2:11 PM

I don’t actually organize my coupons. I only clip and bring the coupons that are for things on my list. However, I can’t tell you how many times I have been at the store and see something on sale that I need and have a coupon for at home. It is times like those that I wish for a coupon organizer that I can bring with me!

I’d love a coupon organizer. At the moment, I just binderclip them all together and shove them in my purse. I try to sort them, like have all the frozen foods together, but it’s a bit of a pain. Plus my store just changed its layout and I can’t remember what’s in which aisle now. (example, creamer is in baking, not with coffee anymore. WTH?) At least if I had an organizer, I could get things done a bit faster.

I use a small, plastic accordian-style organizer. It’s a bit small but works okay. I routinely ‘plan’ my shopping trips, pulling out the coupons I plan to use so I carry the organizer only as a back-up (in case there is an unadvertised deal).

146 The Allen Family September 14, 2009 at 2:47 PM

147 Your Favorite Friend September 14, 2009 at 2:57 PM

148 Emma September 14, 2009 at 2:58 PM

I totally need something like this! Mine are currently in a regular paper envelope that has seen better days. I try to plan my trip and have all the coupons I know I’m using seperate with my shopping list, but more often than not I end up having to sort through and find a few more while shopping. I have a one year old and he is not exactly the most patient shopper, so I need to come up with a better way! :)

149 Mike and Molly Spivey September 14, 2009 at 3:03 PM

I currently use a smaller version of the couponizer that I got for Christmas last year. Needless to say, as I’ve found how much I could save with coupons, I need more room! My current organizer is small enough to fit in my purse but not big enough to hold all my coupons. This sounds ideal!

153 Anonymous September 14, 2009 at 3:19 PM

I use a plastic crate. Not very effective, but at least can find them easily. Just put them in whole book and try to clip as I need. It can get tedious because sometimes I clip and lose the clipped coupons in pages of the whole books….

I use an envelope system that would be just like everyone else’s file folders. I label the envelopes based on the grocery isle. For example dairy, meat, cereal etc. This worked until I found I still had too many coupons to remember what was in each envelope. Now I also use a spreadsheet / database that classifies according to brand, product name, expiration date, and grocery isle. I can use the sort function to help me group by isle, or expiration date. When I need to purge I sort by expiration date and I know which ones need to be thrown out. I shop with a list of my coupons printed out so I can see what I have without looking through the envelopes. Just before check out I use my printed listed (and circle the ones I will use) to pull from the envelopes. You definitely need some type of catalog to know all that you have stuffed in your organizer.

166 jcnkevin September 14, 2009 at 3:48 PM

I started out with one of the traditional accordian type coupon books. I then decided to try and change to the binder method. I love the idea but I have yet to move everything over. It is very time consuming and I haven’t had a chance to finish it. So at this point my coupons are everywhere. No organization at all at this point.

167 Free September 14, 2009 at 3:52 PM

I organize my coupons in a huge zipped binder, with baseball card sheets. But, I would love to have a smaller organizer to pull out special coupons for short trips to the store.

168 Lecia September 14, 2009 at 3:59 PM

I only clip the coupons I think I will use soon, and file those away in a small plastic coupon organizer that I got from the Target $1 section. The uncut coupon sections go in a folder. I’m new to this, so I don’t have many coupons.

169 Sallie September 14, 2009 at 4:02 PM

I’m currently using the “Chaos” method, which means I’ve read a lot of coupon organizing suggestions from folders to binders to boxes to envelopes to accordian files, etc. No one method seems to work for me, so I’m trying to figure out what aspects of each help me the most and try to incorporate them together. The hardest part for me is finding a way to take them with me when I go shopping. There’s so many and there’s no way to contain them and be orgaized at the same time. Did I mentioned having to entertain my 19 month old daughter at the same time I’m trying to find a coupon for any item? My cell phone has been dropped on the floor more than once in attempt to occupy her long enough to find a coupon.

This looks like fun!! lol at the moment all i have that mainly keeps my coupons in place is a little organizer someone got for me at the store, originally i think it was meant to hold and organize index cards but i find it a nice accommodation for my coupons. i’ve been in need of a second one so i can have one for food items and one for non-food items like cleaners, lotions etc.

My filing system is the worst! A big green box with the coupons still in their booklets! It takes me FOREVER to find the coupon I am looking for and is very unmotivating. I’ve tried a few different things! Maybe this coupon organizer would set me straight!

I started using an accordion style coupon file, but that quickly went in the trash when I started printing coupons and buying papers. Well I also had been using a binder. Worked well for months and then I ended up just like you with a binder that was outdated and stacks of coupons.

I recently have tried a shoe box sized plastic bin with envelopes. So far it’s ok. I would love to have something smaller. Having to tote kids and that around gets crazy. I have been interested in this, but haven’t had the money to try it!

288 Misty September 15, 2009 at 2:05 AM

Right now I’m using a c.d. case, which is the best soultion I’ve found. It is like a 65(i think) disc holder and I have plenty of compartments so everything is very easy to find.

I created my own tab separators and organized them. I haven’t been using it long enough to know if I like it or not.

294 Tamas September 15, 2009 at 2:44 AM

I clip ones I want to use and try to file them in a small organizer (fits in my purse) ASAP. The rest are clipped then or later and put into envelopes for military families overseas (they can use expired ones-up to 6 mos-too). Calculator is my cell phone. However, I don’t always find things when I need them! I need to revamp my setup and think the Couponizer will help! Thanks. tcjakabatgmaildotcom

Right now I have my coupons in three places. I have a box that stays at home. I have a pocket organizer that sounds like everyone has and my husband bought my this hard index file because I can never close my accordian style one. I have to keep a rubber band around it and when it’s turned around I open it and all my coupons go flying out beacuse I couldn’t tell it was upside down. Not my favorite one and it is full too now. I love your blog I live in Colorado and I tell my friends in California about your deals and they are hooked now too. You are my bible for Target and Thanks.Oh and I found some Kashi coupons at King Sooper for thoes Colorado shoppers at a self standing display by dairy. It has 6 coupons in it all $1.00 off of each of their different products. Also FYI Gymboree is giving away with any purchase Tide samples of their new Stain Release along with a $1.50 coupon.

311 java_jenny September 15, 2009 at 3:57 AM

This is a fabulous looking product! My version of organizing coupons is very poor but I’ve been trying to make do with it. I keep allof my clipped coupons in an envelope. When I go shopping, I make a list of what I need and then get any appropriate coupons out of the envelope and paper clip them together. I try to put them in the order of where each product is in the store that I plan on going to. It’s a mess but it’s all I have for “organization” at this point in time.

My coupons aren’t organized, that’s why I need this! LOL I make piles with them and it is hard to shop that way.

I use the insert system for most of my coupons, but I actually use the older version of the Couponizer for the loose coupons. I like it, but it has seen some wear and tear, and I’d love to update it with the new version.

Right now,I have binder that holds all the coupon inserts. When I’m going to use the coupon, I cut it out and put it in an envelope in my purse. Coupons in my purse are separated into groups such as cereals, frozen/refrigerated items, paper/household products, beauty items, grocery items, etc. I pull all the coupons I will use in a deal before entering the store. Probably could use a more efficient method.

I just started trying to do the whole coupon thing, and I found a coupon holder at Michaels for a dollar that folds over and I dislike it. It’s too small and I can’t organize anything. This is an awesome giveaway!

Hi! I currently use a hanging folder box with a handle and lid for my uncut inserts, and a half size accordion file for my cut ccupons, which I file alphabetically. It is rather cumbersome, so I’d love to try a new system. Thanks!

372 jpkittie September 15, 2009 at 5:36 PM

I organize my coupons in a 1″ binder with baseball card protectors. Would love the check out the couponizer though! Thanks for the chance.

Great giveaway! I would love to win!

Currently I organize my coupons in a small photo album. I like that it is compact and has lots of pockets that I have labeled for all the categories I need, However, it has been so well-loved and used that it is falling apart! ;)

374 Sarah September 15, 2009 at 5:49 PM

I currently have all my coupons in one of the free little bags that came with my birth control sample. Had to use it for something. I go through and paper clip my coupons that I am going to use to my grocery list then each week.

I would love this coupon organizer. I currently use a organizer that I bought in Staples. It’s a bit bulky and hard to see the different tabs.
Thanks.

I’ve been using the same coupon organizer for many years. It’s been stapled together and now I’ve hand sewn it back together. I’m in desperate need of a new organizer!

I currently use a small accordion type holder with only 7 slots – not nearly enough. I only clip the coupons I think I would actually use and throw away the rest of the flier. I would love to get a better and bigger system. Thanks for the chance!

wow that organizer would be great for in my purse! Right now I use one of those clear plastic shoe boxes with cut to fit notebook file tabs. Then I have a smaller binder type thing for my purse of coupons i’m planning on using or commonly use.

I have a special notebook with pockets. I paperclip what I am using and hook to the page with the list for that store. I could use something that was better.

393 angie September 16, 2009 at 1:26 AM

I have 3 plastic accordian style coupon sorters. One is for non-food items, one for food items, and one for store coupons (Target, King Soopers, Walgreens, Rite Aid…) and resturant coupons.
I like my system right now because it is easy to find coupons at the store if there is a mark-down deal. I would like to try something new to see if it works better.

Currently I keep my coupons is a photo album that holds 4×6 photos. It’s better than my little blue plastic coupon organizer because I can see each coupon.

397 Jackie September 16, 2009 at 3:12 AM

I currently keep them all in a normal envelope, arranged according to how they are found in my usual path of the store.

I’m not very organized, I get good about keeping my coupons all together in a small accordion folder but most of the time I put them in my wallet. I would love to be more organized. A personal quest.

399 Christine September 16, 2009 at 9:51 AM

I’m currently stuck between two methods! Both a binder, and filing inserts by date. Maybe this would be the answer. Thanks for your blog –

400 Hannah September 16, 2009 at 11:56 AM

I actually don’t organize my coupons right now. I work a 10hr a day job as well as teach piano lessons in the evenings and sell Mary Kay so there really is no time for me to organize. I pretty much just keep my coupons unclipped in a stack by my desk at home.

401 Wendy September 16, 2009 at 2:22 PM

Currently I use a coupon accordian file which I think works fine, but I like your organizer even better. I am always looking for ways to improve.

402 Jennifer September 16, 2009 at 2:54 PM

RIght now I’m using a coupon box…but it’s combersome and I think I’m outgrowing it. I’d love to try this.

415 Jenny September 18, 2009 at 4:19 PM

I use large envelopes and organize by date. All of my inserts go in their assigned weeks. I also have an envelope-size organizer for unused coupons already cut out, categorized by my main store’s aisles so that I can quickly find them as I walk through the store. It still can be an overwhelming task, and am open to ANY organizing method that will simplify the process!

Thanks for the offering!
