Works for Me: Using a Neti Pot

by Marcy on October 15, 2008 · 0 comments

Because my husband, daughter and I have all been dealing with having colds this week, I thought I would post about using a Neti Pot. Because, quite frankly, pretty much all that has been on my mind for the last 12 hours is snot. And how to get it out of my head. Pronto. I’m sorry if that is too much information…but it is true.

If you have never heard of a Neti Pot, it is this strange looking little pot that you fill with warm salt water to flush out your nasal passages. Here is a picture:

I had never heard of a Neti Pot until about 4 years ago when a doctor recommend that I invest in one to help with my allergies/rhinitis. It took me several weeks of suffering to finally get up the nerve to purchase one. I went to Whole Foods and found what I needed for less than $20.

Learning how to actually use the Neti Pot is a little tricky at first…because let’s face it, sticking warm salt water up one nostril and waiting for the water to come out the other side isn’t the most natural feeling thing in the world! But any unpleasantness is well worth the end result. I can typically feel my sinuses draining within minutes of flushing them out. And when I lose my sense of smell from being so stuffy, I typically get it back fairly quickly after using the Neti Pot.

And in true “Stretching a Buck” style, I have to mention that a $20 ish investment is totally worth it if you can possibly avoid using medication. The salt lasts forever too…I have yet to purchase more.

While I am not advocating using no meds at all, I think that the Neti Pot is a great (natural) way to clean things out. This, gargling salt water, and downing Vitamin C is what I am currently doing in an attempt to feel better. Sleep would be nice too, but unfortunately my daughter has other things in mind!

So there you have it. Using a Neti Pot works for me. I never thought I would be talking to the internet about flushing out my nose, but having a stuffy head can make you do silly things, right?

P.S. If you really want to see a Neti Pot in action, just google “neti pot”. You will be amazed at what pops up. :-)

P.P. S. Thanks to Tara @ Deal Seeking Mom for letting me know that you can get a Neti Pot for free at Rite Aid this week. Check out her post here for more info.
