Back in the Saddle: My Trip to CVS – I Saved 55%

by Marcy on June 4, 2008 · 0 comments

I have avoided going to CVS for at least a month or so now. My main reasons were 1) I was pretty stocked up on household and toiletry items 2) I was driving myself crazy chasing down all the deals 3) The deals haven’t seemed as great to me lately and 4) I needed a break!!

Today I did a quick inventory of our pantry and storage area and decided that I should go ahead and take advantage of a few deals I had seen. (There is tons of info about CVS each week online. If you are new to CVS and want more info, I like to read here, here and here to get my ideas).

I went to 2 different stores tonight and did 4 separate transactions. If you have more than one CVS store in your area, I would advise you to check them all out. I have two in my area that I frequent and the one store is awesome…they always have what I want, are very easy going about my crazy couponing, and let me do multiple transactions. The other store? Not so much.

Here is what I purchased and how I worked each transaction. Note that I had no Extra Care Bucks since I haven’t been shopping at CVS lately, and I have no gift card $ either.

Transaction #1:

* 3 – 8 packs of Bounty Paper Towels – $4.96/ea
* 1 9-pack Charmin Ultra Toilet Paper – $4.96/ea

Total Before Coupons: $19.80
Coupons Used: 1 – $3/15 CVS purchase (info about these here); 3 – $0.25/1 Bounty; 1 – $0.25/1 Charmin

* 1 box of Rice Krispies – $1.88
* 2 boxes of Puffs Tissues – $0.89/ea
* 2 Listerine Smart Rinse Mouthwashes – $3.49
* 2 bags of Chex Mix – $1.99/ea

Total Before Coupons: $14.62 (not sure what happened here..somehow my $3/15 still worked – I just caught this error when typing this up…maybe it worked b/c I was at $15 after tax?)
Coupons Used: 1 – $3/15 CVS purchase (info about these
here); 2 – $1/1 Chex here; 2 – $1/1 Listerine here;
Total Out of Pocket (OP): $8.01
ECB’s Earned: $6.98 (from Listerine)

Transaction #3:

* 3 Jumbo Packs of Pampers Diapers – $7.99/ea

Transaction #4:

* 1 pack Huggies Swim Diapers – $8.99
* 1 large bag of M&M’s – $1.77

Total Before Coupons: $10.76
Coupons Used:
1 – $2/1 Huggies Swimmers from insert; $5 in ECB’s from Transaction #3
Total Out of Pocket (OP): $4.03
ECB’s Earned: $0

Summary

Total for all 4 transactions (without tax) if I had used no coupons: $69.15
Total Spent Out of Pocket: $31.03
Total Savings: $38.12 – 55%!!

Not too shabby for me! I am not a super pro CVS shopper like a lot of other bloggers out there, but I was happy with this.

A few notes: I noticed that Chex Mix was not on sale for $1 at my Central Ohio CVS stores (unless I purchased the wrong size). I also did not see Pampers wipes on sale for $2.99 at either of the stores I went to. Finally, the Bounty/Charmin deal here was $10 if you buy 4 at $4.96. I have seen conflicting prices on various posts.

And finally, my venture back into the world of CVS came with a literal bang tonight. Someone backed into my husband’s car when I was finis
hing up my shopping at the second store. Thankfully, the woman didn’t run away and came into the store to get me. And no one got hurt, she has insurance, and the damage wasn’t too bad. So I’m trying to put a positive spin on this and count my blessings! But it did put a slight damper on the evening.
