Grocery Budget Challenge – April Goals

by Marcy on April 2, 2008 · 0 comments

I have been thinking a lot about what I am spending money on lately, and I have come to the conclusion that being “thrifty,” or “frugal,” or whatever you want to call it, is not easy for me. At all. I like nice things. I tend to be a brand snob. I get caught up in what others have sometimes. And so this whole “stretching a buck” thing is difficult for me.

The first step to making any improvement in your life (whether it be health related, career related, money related etc…) starts with recognizing that you have room to improve, right? And I have recognized that I can do better when it comes to both spending and saving money.

I have decided to rework my goals a little for April. Spending an average of $75/week, every week of the year is too generic of a goal for me. (Thanks, Jennifer, for all of your tips and advice about this). Birthdays happen, holidays happen, etc… and I need my budget to be a little more flexible to account for this. And so with that knowledge, here is what I have come up with for April. I plan on trying to set goals like this monthly now, and will post them to help hold myself accountable.

My Grocery/Household Spending Goals for April:

* I am not allowed to buy even one box of cereal. Even if it is a super great deal. 20 boxes of cereal is more than enough cereal to have stockpiled for 2 adults. Especially since 1 of those adults rarely eats cereal!

* I am taking a break from toiletry & household item purchases this month. I have enough toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, wipes, shampoo, conditioner, cleaning products etc… etc… to equip 3 families comfortably for at least 2 months. OK, that is an exaggeration, but I do have PLENTY of these items stockpiled to get us through a month or more.

* I am going to try to focus more on “real” food this month when feeding my family. I am reading this book right now, and while I am not ready to give up my strawberries during their off season, I do think that this book makes some great points about the state of our food today. I am hoping to work more salads, grilled meats and veggies into our diets this month which should be easier with the weather warming up.

* Because I have so much stockpiled, I am going to keep my weekly budget at $75 this month. I will adjust this next month as needed/able.

I’ll keep you posted on my progress!
